Still soaking in all that was CAP CITY HALF this week. Seriously, what a morning!! There was just something special and magical about the entire event this year…I think this was my 12th CAP CITY and this one will sit in my heart as the best yet. I didn’t PR but came in two minutes faster than last year. Which I will totally take! I knew a PR was not my goal for this race. So, I mixed up my race plan. I tried running straight for the first 3 miles. Then switching to my normal 3 minute run/1 minute walk interval. The straight run was great, I felt strong and honestly confident. Switching to intervals when I did was just right. My legs did become tired during the back 6 miles. The wind was crazy at times. It made storming up hills a challenge. The last few miles I walked a bit more, off my interval plan…I don’t regret it at all. I hit the finish faster than last year so yep, I will take it. I am glad I tried the straight run. I was curious how my body would handle that. I think for longer distance, I am an interval girl, and will keep to that plan for my next half. I stuck to my mantra of I GET TO…when the pain cave hit, I looked down at my arm, I GET TO. I seriously get to do this, my body is giving me this gift. One foot in front of the other.

HALF #14 COMPLETE.

SNACKS AND SIPS OF THE WEEK

PRE RACE FUELING

My go to pre race snack is a bagel and a banana. I am usually not super hungry first thing in the morning. However, I know my body needs some carbs before I ask it to do all the miles I am planning. It’s super simple. I don’t even toast the bagel. Sometimes I add peanut butter to it. Most of the time, I eat it plain.

PRE RACE SIPS

Pre race sips are layered for me. I drink 8oz of water right when I get up in the morning. Kicks off hydration after 8ish hours of sleep. I then grab a 12oz cup of coffee-that caffeine is a great kick start to what I have ahead.

ADULT BEVIES

As I have written about before-nothing hits better after a race than a mimosa from Cameron Mitchell Events in VIP. I seem to crave sweets post run. A splash of orange juice with a whole lot of bubbles is chef’s kiss! Cheers to 13.1!

MORE THAN MY SPORT

I said this before. The connections made through sport are special. Sometimes they hit the heart more than the sport itself. That was my CAP CITY HALF, more than the 13.1, more than my feet pounding the pavement. It was the hugs, smiles, conversations, high fives and lots of laughter. That was the true magic of the day. It was seeing friends on the side of the course cheering-friends/family I didn’t expect to see…I stopped and hugged everyone of them. It was seeing my run fam on the course, all of us cheering for each other-pure love and joy. These moments, these humans are a huge part of my why, part of the I GET TO. They keep me coming back for more, their support and friendship will be ever lasting.

THIS WEEK IN WOMEN IN SPORTS HISTORY

  • Patty Berg: Won her sixth LPGA Western Golf Open in 1957.

  • Candace Parker: Became the first girl to win the McDonald’s All-American High School Dunk Contest on March 30, 2004.

ALL THE GEAR

EAR BUDS

I have gone through so many versions of wireless ear buds over the years. Seriously, so many versions!! I really love the open ear version. My favorite has been SHOKZ– my last version, the head band version after years of use broke. I wanted the new non head band design but didn’t want to pay the larger price for them…totally have realized I am hard on them. Spending less on these is super wise for how much I go through them. I finally found a TRAUSI pair on AMAZON. They are light and have good sound. At the time, they were on major sale, like major sale! I paid $35 for an over $200 pair!! WIN WIN WIN!

CAP CITY VIP JACKET

Not gonna lie, each year I look forward to the CAP CITY VIP JACKET! I am a collector of said jacket, year after year…I anticipate the revealing of the design! I wear it on race day, and the day after and maybe even the day after that! You know I love a good gear piece and this one is always a special addition to my closet!
