It’s RACE WEEK! Eeeek!! Bring it on Cap City Half! This training cycle has been cold, snowy, icy, windy, rainy, sunny and above all joyful! I GET to do this and on the days that were not ideal, that mantra rang deep in my heart. I dealt with bursitis and tendinitis in my right knee. A first for me. I adjusted my training to rest and heal. Which to be honest was not easy in the beginning -as a self proclaimed overachiever. As I adjusted and leaned into my new norm to heal, I relaxed. I believed in myself. I trusted my training and in the strength of what I have built. I grew to understand how this injury was not a set back but a turning point. I learned that showing myself grace was key to my joy during this training cycle. My body was still giving me what I needed. I could still run. I just had to make a few adjustments and recover better and longer. Here we are race week, one of my most favorite weeks of the year. Toeing that START LINE on Saturday will be a gift. One I never take it for granted. I GET to do this!
RACE DAY CHECK LIST-WHAT I PACK IN MY GEAR CHECK BAG
Oofos for post race recovery
Body Glide
Aquafor
Goodrs
Earbuds
Burts Bees Chapstick
Pair of Sweats
VIP Jacket-usually wear that pre race, take it off before I head to the start line
Hand Held Water Bottle for race-filled with water/Liquid IV, also stocked with race day fuel
SNACKS AND SIPS OF THE WEEK
CHARCUTERIE SNACK PLATE
I love snacking this way. Super simple green grapes, thin pretzels (I love these) and a handful of almonds. If I weren’t lactose intolerant I would totally add cheese cubes to this mix. You can also add salami or pepperoni etc.
COFFEE CONNECTIONS COFFEE BEANS
Marc brought home some of our favorite local roasted coffee beans this week. COFFEE CONNECTIONS HILLIARD does it right, and creates amazing roasted beans. Love being capable of grinding and brewing COFFEE CONNECTIONS at home!
MORE THAN MY SPORT
Celebrating EARTH DAY as I write this. Starting to plan our gardens for the season…one thing I absolutely love doing. There is something really wonderful about the entire experience of being in the garden. About being grounded in the outdoor space that surrounds me. My bare feet in the dirt, the smell of sweet flowers and fresh cut grass. I am grateful for all of earth’s gifts. Simple and easily taken for granted, especially through harsh winter months. This is my happy time of year. It’s a time of rebirth when everything awakens. Browns turn into colors that resemble a Monet painting. I truly love being in my gardens, there is something so healing and peaceful within it all. HAPPY EARTH DAY this week-soak in everything our planet has to offer.
THIS WEEK IN WOMEN IN SPORTS HISTORY
- U.S. Women’s Hockey:The United States defeated Canada in overtime to win the 2025 IIHF World Championship, marking their 10th gold medal in the event.
- Boston Marathon (1980):Rosie Ruiz was disqualified after winning the women’s division, as it was later discovered she did not actually run the race.
- Track & Field:Tamara Dorval of American University set a new school record in track, earning her the Gregorio’s Trattoria Student-Athlete of the Week award.
- NCAA Gymnastics:Oklahoma won the 2025 NCAA Gymnastics Championship title, defeating teams like Utah, UCLA, and Missouri.
ALL THE GEAR
I of course found this sweet bracelet on my social feeds. I had been looking for something I could wear jewelry wise that would symbolize my love for tennis. This was the perfect piece! Tennis racket strings made into a bracelet! I can wear it when I am on the courts, running or in the gym. It is simple and has understated meaning. STRINGLET come in two sizes-I ordered the kid sized (my wrists are tiny, anyone surprised by that?) They also come in a bunch of bright and happy colors! I picked the white, so I can wear it with everything. I will for sure be ordering more! Tennis parents, these would be a great team gift!!
RACE DAY BAG
LOVE this sling bag from SHIRALEAH! It is the perfect size to carry all my race day items. I never want to carry a large tote or backpack-I seriously don’t take that much to fill a large bag. Plus, there will be so many bags in gear check. Consider the gear check space. Think about the other racers and the volunteers who have to organize them all. A small to medium bag is best. I LOVE all the pockets this sling has!! This is one thing I seem to look for in all bags I buy. I also LOVE this bright green color, it comes in a bunch of color choices! With all the bags in gear check, they are marked with bib numbers, etc. A bag that is different than the rest stands out. Its bright color helps the volunteers find my bag quickly. They don’t even need to check for the bib number.

What a weekend for celebrating the gift of sport! Watched a lot of college tennis. Ran the OSU 4 Miler and held high our National Champion Buckeyes. And of course, celebrated Rory’s Masters win. Within each of these experiences, there are stories of resilience. Stories of never giving up, no matter the chatter. There are stories of performing with heart, of being in total awe of doing what is loved. Stories of great fight with everything to make dreams reality. Ahhhh this weekend was filled with it all!
SNACKS AND SIPS OF THE WEEK
COTTAGE CHEESE AND STRAWBERRIES
Super simple and protein packed. Love cottage cheese with strawberries as a quick snack. I am lactose intolerant and have missed cottage cheese so much! Have searched for a non dairy option, that actually tastes like the real thing. Finally found it! Surprisingly, it is not a fancy brand. It is simple and pretty accessible at GIANT EAGLE where we shop-LACTAID Cottage Cheese!
ICED LATTE
Now that Spring is here I am gravitating towards iced latte’s. My go to is always the VANILLIA LATTE with ALMOND MILK. COFFEE CONNECTIONS HILLIARD makes an amazing iced latte and is my absolute fav coffee shop to pop in to.
ADULT BEVIES
POST RACE MIMOSA
There is truly something just right about a post race mimosa! CAMERON MITCHELL PREMIER EVENTS knows how to make them-lots of bubbles and a splash of orange juice. Chefs kiss!
MORE THAN MY SPORT
Thinking deeply about friendship/sisterhood these days. As athletes we are more than opponents, teammates etc. Through sport, we develop bonds that others may not understand. The journey we experience is something we get from athlete to athlete. It is a commonality that the outside world doesn’t have the gift of experiencing.
The bonds we create over the miles, during practices, wins, defeats are unlike any other. Hold tight to those relationships-they are special. These connections will last through it all, they are important and hold more than memories. They hold part of your story and this sisterhood will understand how sweet and sacred that is.
THIS WEEK IN WOMEN IN SPORTS HISTORY
On April 14, 2018, NPR reported on Abdul-Qaadir, a Muslim basketball player who holds the state record for the highest all-time high school scorer for men and women. She played for the University of Memphis and was the first Muslim woman in a headscarf to play NCAA Division I.
The week of April 14th also sees the 39th annual National Girls & Women in Sports Day, hosted by the Women’s Sports Foundation. The day is a celebration of women’s sports and the impact they have on society.
ALL THE GEAR
These are my favs! The absolute best in recovery for your feet! Whatever sport you play, these are your answer to happiness post activity! I own multiple pairs. The slides are my favorite as I can wear barefooted or with socks. FLEET FEET COLUMBUS carries OOFOS in many different styles and colors.
An essential part of my running routine, especially when wearing skirts. This BODY GLIDE is amazing and is the anti chafe answer! Use it anywhere you chafe and you will not be sorry.
COACHES CORNER
I LOVE THIS:
Mirror Mirror on the wall,
I’ll always get up after I fall.
And whether I run, walk or have to crawl,
I’ll set my goals and achieve them all!

Well, Mother Nature has been busy here in Columbus this week! All the rain has fallen, everything is so green and blooming because of it-which is amazing BUT…wow has the wet weather thrown spring sports for loop here! Our MIT long run on Saturday was water logged, to say the least. We ran the trail that is parallel to the Olentangy River. Within hours, parts of the trail we ran out on were totally flooded! Made our run back to our launch location a great adventure! Lots of rescheduling, canceling and logistics managing for all middle school high school and college spring sports too…ahhhh! Hoping we get a bit of reprieve this week from all the rain…a little sunshine would be amazing!
My white shoes were of course totally muddy after the wet run on Saturday…found a little cleaning trick on IG and thought I try it.
IN A BOWL MIX:
toothpaste
baking soda
warm waterI used a toothbrush to scrub it into the shoe. Let it rest and then rinse.
I did it a few times. Not like new but much cleaner than after our run on Saturday!!
SNACKS AND SIPS OF THE WEEK
STRAWBERRY YOGURT CLUSTERS
These have been a fav of mine for months! Super easy to make and super yummy to eat!
Mix in a Bowl
1 Container of Fresh Strawberries sliced
Half of a large Container of Plain Yogurt-I use Dairy-Free Yogurt
On a cookie sheet place spoon full clusters of the Strawberry/Yogurt Mix until sheet is full. Place in freezer for at least 30 minutes. While the clusters are in the freezer, melt a small bag of DARK CHOCOLATE CHIPS in a bowl. Use the microwave and heat until they are all melted.
Pull the clusters out of the freezer and drizzle the melted DARK CHOCOLATE over top of each cluster. Put them back in the freezer for another 30 minutes.
Once solid, I put them in freezer storage bags and store them in our freezer. Super easy to grab for a quick snack.
LEMON GINGER SHOTS
My Personal Trainer clued me in on this and I am so glad he did. Great anti-inflammatory trick. There are several ways I have tried this little concoction and each way has worked for me.
- Frozen Shots popped into a tall glass of water
- Squeeze fresh lemon juice in ice trays. Add grated ginger and turmeric. Let freeze. Pop one cube a day into a morning glass of water
- Liquid Shot
- In a small pitcher, squeeze a lemons, add grated ginger and turmeric and place in the fridge. I found that making a large amount at once was the most efficient way to go about this.
- Once a day I drink this shot straight, usually about a 1/2 a cup-ish in a small glass.
MORE THAN MY SPORT
Ever wondered what it would be like to try a sport or other activity that you have never tried before? Pushing you outside of that comfort zone of your happy place for just a bit. Tennis has been in my life since I was 7. I immersed myself in all aspects of the game, it was such a deep part of me. LATER, like much LATER the running bug hit which totally threw me for a loop. It changed and challenged me in way tennis never had. It opened up my world and brought a new piece to my heart. Tennis never left and truly my passion for the sport has grown with time. Stay open and stay willing. Say yes to trying new things. You never know how new experiences and opportunities will enhance you and the sport that is your true love.
THIS WEEK IN WOMEN IN SPORTS HISTORY
This week in women’s sports history, April 7,2025 , marks the anniversary of the 1999 Women’s World Cup final where the US Women’s National Team won against China, a game that helped propel women’s soccer to new heights.
Here’s a deeper look at that historic event and other notable moments in women’s sports history this week:
- 1999 Women’s World Cup Final:On July 10, 1999, the US Women’s National Team, led by players like Kristine Lilly and Briana Scurry, won the Women’s World Cup against China, a victory that took place in front of 90,000 fans in Pasadena, California.
- The Rise of Women’s Soccer:This victory, and the team’s overall performance in the tournament, helped catapult women’s soccer to a new level of popularity and recognition.
- The USWNT’s Legacy:The US Women’s National Team’s success in the 1999 World Cup, and their subsequent achievements, have inspired generations of young female athletes and continue to be a source of pride for many.
- Other Notable Events:This week also saw other important events in women’s sports history, including the Battle of the Sexes tennis match in 1973, where Billie Jean King defeated Bobby Riggs, and the rise of women’s basketball.
- Continued Progress:The ongoing growth and popularity of women’s sports, including the NWSL, WNBA,and NCAA women’s basketball, demonstrate the continued progress and impact of women in sports.
ALL THE GEAR
WATER BOTTLE
Essential gear for any athlete, right? How many of these have you been through in the last few years? I have had a few favs but replace them every so often. I have owned a few different HYDROFLASKS and now have the bright pink LULULEMON bottle. I am one that dislikes bottles with straws, so always looking for other options. I love this bottle I currently have. It has dents now from dropping it a few times. Oh well, that is expected, I think it happens to pretty much all metal water bottles. Do you have a favorite brand? I am always on the search!
TENNIS BAG
I have owned the same brand of tennis gear since high school-in different variations. Just this past fall, I felt it was time to try new brands and styles. I had important specs for a new tennis bag. As I was searching, I went down the tennis bag rabbit hole. I watched all the videos on each brand and version. Want to know about tennis bags, I’ve got you. I landed on this YONEX bag that checked all the boxes. There are more pockets than I could ask for. It has a shoe tunnel and holds 12 rackets (I think, right now I have 5 stored). It also has a backpack carry option and the color is perfect. Totally perfect!
COACHES CORNER
One thing I know for sure your gut is never wrong. Follow your intuition, know your gut and heart will lead you just where you need to go. Lead your life with intention and trust yourself. You will be happy that you did.

Feeling spring this week! Ahhh…flowers blooming, sun is shining and the color green is popping up everywhere! This winter has felt long, cold and heavy. This past Saturday’s long run felt amazing in a tank and skirt…had a little more pep in my step for sure! I know, here in Columbus this is called “fake spring” as there is a bit more of winter still lingering. I will take what Mother Nature gifts us and will be grateful for the colorful, warmish, sunshiny days.
SNACKS AND SIPS OF THE WEEK
ENERGY BITES
A family fav! This recipe came directly from PREMIER AT SAWMILL ATHLETIC CLUB’S kitchen. This was our club that was a staple in Columbus for 40 years. It closed shortly after life started to reopen after COVID. Before the closure, I stopped by the bistro to grab some bites. I ended up leaving with my energy bites and the club’s recipe for them.
PREMIER AT SAWMILL’S NO-BAKE ENERGY BITES
good for 7-10 days
1 cup of Old Fashion Oats
1/2 cup of peanut butter
1/2 cup of ground flaxseed
1/2 cup of chocolate chips
1/3 cup honey
1 Tbsp. of chia seeds
2/3 cup of toasted coconut
1 tsp. of vanilla extract
Mix all ingredients in a bowl. Roll into 1 inch balls. Place in container, store in refrigerator.
WATER with LIQUID IV AND CREATINE
This is an every morning sip for me. After coffee, during a workout. Not my first water of the day but my first big intake. 32 oz water, 1 pk of LIQUID IV and 1 scoop of 1ST PHORM CREATINE. This is a great hydration kick start for the day. My goal is usually 80-100oz of water a day, depending on my movement. I track my hydration on my Garmin watch. It calculates how much hydration I need. It does this based on the data it takes in during my workouts, runs, or tennis sessions.
ADULT BEVIES
BUBBLES ROSE FRUITED ALE BY RHINEGEIST
Love this Cincy,Ohio based brand! This bev is sweet, fruity, bubbly and super refreshing! Love one of these after a day in the garden or post run in the sun! Perfect patio sitting ale!
MORE THAN MY SPORT
Labels. We all have done it-put a label on it, on someone, on yourself. One label we wear is ATHLETE. It is a big one, a very visible one. Growing up, verbiage around me and used towards me LABELED me. It created an identity within that wasn’t me. As I grew, I carried those LABELS-they became heavy. Heavy because they weren’t me, they were what the outside saw as me. In my adult life I have worked hard to shed the LABELS and narratives that didn’t suit me. I have created new LABELS, my own LABELS that are me at my core. I have learned that any LABEL of any kind does not define me. I can delete or add to them as I wish. I am more than JUST a label, I am layers. Look past the LABELS and dive into the layers-we are all more than ATHLETES. We are humans with gifts that go much deeper than that one LABEL. Start discovering all the layers within, stay open and curious with yourself and others.
THIS WEEK IN WOMEN IN SPORTS HISTORY
- 1967: Kathrine Switzer Runs Boston Marathon:Kathrine Switzer made history by becoming the first woman to officially run the Boston Marathon, challenging the prevailing belief that women were not fit for long-distance running.
- 1972: Title IX of the Education Act:The passage of Title IX of the Education Act was a landmark achievement for women in sports, ensuring equal opportunities for women in athletics.
- 1973: Billie Jean King and the Women’s Tennis Association:Billie Jean King founded the Women’s Tennis Association, leading the way to equal prize money in tennis.
- 1924: International Women’s Sports Federation:The formation of the International Women’s Sports Federation led to more competitions being held for women.
ALL THE GEAR
LOVE, LOVE, LOVE collecting gear at events and experiences. Our spring break trip watching Wittenberg Tennis play lead us to the USTA NATIONAL CAMPUS. In my mind, tennis heaven. I was completely smitten! The merch shop was well stocked and the staff were amazing!! Had a blast shopping and came home with some great goodies!
This is essential in my world. I seriously wear my watch almost 24/7-only taking it off to charge and for showers. I never pegged myself as a smart watch human. Finding my athlete self again years ago was transformative. The watch, in its many versions I have owned, has become a large component of my everyday living.
I currently own the Venu 2S, have owned the Venu Square too. Love the look and feel of the 2S , and the price was right for me. There are some data points I wish it had. Other versions have more data options. All in all, I really love my Garmin, will continue to invest in these smartwatches!
If you are at all an athlete that runs/walks outside during dark hours a NOXGEAR vest is a MUST! I can’t count the times I am driving and can barely see a runner/walker in the dark. Safety first my friends! These vests are affordable. They come in many colors you can click through, each one has the options to blink, or stay static. They are super light to wear and are easy to put on and take off. A big plus for me is that NOXGEAR is based right here in Columbus, Ohio!! Home grown! I love my vest and know when I am running at dark-o’clock that I am visible!
COACHES CORNER
I love this from WORD PORN:
When you connect with people who are good for you, you feel it. This is a BIG deal. Don’t forget to acknowledge how great it is to be around someone who lights you up. Tell them, even if you feel a little weird. Your people love your weirdness.
CONNECTION-one of my words for the year. Connection is everything and will get you everywhere. When you are around just the right humans-who lift you and light you that is where the magic happens!
